Budget Day

The federal government has released their budget today and surprise surprise, the libs and the ndp aren't backing it. But don't fret as the libs have already stated their intention to abstain from the vote, thus avoiding an election on the premise that Canadians do not want an election right now. Translation-the numbers aren't there to ensure the libs a victory.

Follow up:

So the prorogation of parliament that took place recently has the cons coming back yet again with a lackluster budget that no one can get excited about. With the huge deficit we are under, the least the cons can say is that there will be no tax hikes. Score one for those that care, but in all reality, I think that raising the gst probably would have been helpful in reducing this debt. Yes I know that people would get upset and say they cannot afford it blah blah, but in the long run, I'd rather take a small hit to pay this off than to let it inflate any further.

Not much substance to this budget and I am kind of shocked that they decreased funding to the military but then again, with troops expected to be in reduced capacity in the near future, I suppose the funding won't be needed.

On a side not, the announcement yesterday that the government is looking into changing the national anthem is just plain ridiculous. Sure, if it must be dealt with, do it at a later time, not now, there are more pressing issues at hand and from what I am reading on the net, a lot of people think that it should be left as is.

There's only one problem with raising the GST. It would severely limit, or halt, the recovery in Ontario, the country's productive heart and soul.

With the intro of the HST, and because it is primarily a consumption tax dependant upon people spending in order to see any revenue, and with unemployment where it is, it would put a damper on the already weak semi-recovery we are starting to see.

An increase in GST wouldn't have the effect we need right now.

I don't believe the HST will save Ontario. With minimum wage going up, business will up prices and the savings won't be there. Any so called advantage of the HST will be offset. The proposed 600000 jobs to be created by this tax is laughable at best. The HST will make people pay even more than before and in hindsight, the GST was tolerable. Raising the GST back to where it was recently would have been a great idea say for the fact that it would have pissed a lot of voters off.
