Five For Canada

Five gold medals in the past five years that is. Canada's junior hockey team pulled off the victory in a 5-1 win over Sweden in the world junior championship, winning the gold medal and matching the success of the juniors in the years of 1993-1997 by doing it in 5 years consecutively.

Follow up:

It was an intense and fast paced game, full of penalties, mostly for the Canadians, and it also included a few dives here and there (mostly, well all perpetrated by the Swedish goalie Jacob Markstrom). Canada quickly took the lead under a minute in the first period and continued to play strong throughout the game and were never really in any serious trouble as the Swedes coughed up plenty of pucks in their own end creating numerous chances for Canada.

The Swedes, who were stacked with talent were favoured to win over Canada but Canada, riding high from their own unbeaten streak throughout the tournament had other plans in mind and wowed fans in the Scotiabank Place leaving behind a dejected Swedish team.

This game was supposed to be payback for Sweden as they lost to Canada in the 2008 final, but players like John Tavares and Dustin Tokarski weren't having any of that nonsense. This is Canada's 15th gold medal in the championship and incidentally, Sweden has only ever won the gold once, in 1981.

Overall it was a great game...
