Harper attempts to assert Arctic claims

Fail...

Stephen Harper was up North flexing his muscles with the announcement that Canada will be getting a new polar class ice-breaker to be named after the much loved or much despised John "The Chief" Diefenbaker. In what looks to be more than pre election rhetoric, Harper proudly proclaimed "When it launches for the first time into the frigid Canadian waters, the Diefenbaker, as it is almost certain to be nicknamed, will be a crowning achievement for our country".

Follow up:

Now as some of you may know and lived through the Diefenbaker era, he was a whackjob and was responsible for the cancellation of the Avro Arrow, the world's first supersonic bomber interceptor. This project was expensive as hell, yet many Canuck's were proud that it was a purely home grown project that 'The Chief" canceled. A whole industry disappeared overnight and many Canadians will never forget.

So Harper decides to name an ice breaker after this guy and some people wish to cheer. Harper wants to champion himself, as Dief did, a True North hero..."The true North is our destiny - for our explorers, for our entrepreneurs, for our artists. And to not embrace its promise now, at the dawn of its ascendancy would be to turn our backs on what it is to be Canadian."

What the fuck ever Steve, this is pure election bullshit, if you cared so much about the North, what's up with your environmental policies, or lack thereof? Also, if global warming is happening as so many believe (I myself have doubts), why the heck do we need an ice breaker up there if there will be no ice? Especially when the projected commission date of the ship is 2017? 9 years from now, as if it takes 9 years to build a damn ship? Are we supposed to be proud of one ship that takes 9 years to build? LMFAO!!!
