Whereas demonstrations against the G20 et al evolve into violent confrontations and are met with a non-lethal response such as water canons, rubber bullets, and tear gas, the actions taken against Iranian students (or Chinese students, for that matter) were meant to set an example and no thought was given to the possiblity of the loss of life.

These are really two unrelated episodes.

The basic premise is the same regardless. For all those that are actually causing a problem, there are those who are not that are also treated the same. Difference being in western nations, instead of shooting innocent people, they just get tazered or tear gassed. Its kind of odd seeing our government throw its support behind a riot.

Tear gas can't diferentiate between the active participant and the idler. If you're standing peacefully in the midst of a riotous mob, don't be surprised if you're mistaken for one of the rebels. Guilty by association, I suppose.

As for our government supporting a riot, I guess the ends justify the means. If we want a change of leadership in Iran, and we're unwilling to make the change ourselves, we need to support those who are willing.

What is the end desire for those protesting the G20 and is violence the best way to get their message out?
