Natives will fight HST

Natives in both Ontario and B.C plan to fight the HST that will take effect on July 1, 2010. The conflict looms because of a broken relationship between the governments and the Native peoples. Ontario Native Chiefs say they will launch a campaign against the HST that will include road blockades, traffic disruptions and possible legal action against the government of Canada. BC first nations are also considering different courses of action on their turf. First Nations leaders say that the government did not consult them, which they feel is an attack on their sovereignty because the government has a legal requirement to consult the First Nations on matters that impact their rights to title, something they feel this tax does.

Follow up:

The HST in Ontario would eliminate the existing exemption of First Nation's people from paying provincial taxes.

Assembly of First Nations Chief Shawn Atleo said the brewing controversy over Ontario, B.C. and the federal government's decision to go ahead with implementing the HST was another example of the tattered relationship between natives and Canada.

"This is part of a deep misunderstanding that pervades our society overall and we have to reconcile between First Nations government and the Crown," said Atleo, during a special chiefs assembly in Ottawa on Tuesday. "Something is wrong and broken, it is time we changed the relationship between First Nations and Canada."

The Native resistance is no joke and one would expect them to keep to their word as they have shown their willingness to fight for their beliefs in the past.

"The options are really direct action because government is not wanting to sit down with the First Nations leadership," said Toulouse.

"This fight is going to continue to the end. We are not going to accept this HST," he said.

It shall be an interesting turn of events whenever this takes place. I know the racists will have their day blasting the First Nations for doing what they believe is right, while these same racists sit there and do nothing but complain that they are being taxed. There will also be those who are not racist, yet cannot understand why Natives are exempt from certain taxes, or they do understand why but believe that they should not be. Everyone is entitled to believe what they wish, but it seems an all too common occurrence to see the racist undertones in people's responses in comments on things like online news etc. The fact that Natives are tax exempt in the first place causes quite a bit of conflict to some who don't agree they they should be. But the Native people know how to be heard and if it takes blockading a road or slowing traffic, then all the power to them. It will be nice to see someone actually stand up for what is right and let the government know that they cannot keep taking and taking from the people. I'm just disappointed that no others will be out doing the same. We all recall Oka crisis, at least those of us who were around then. We remember the violence, but I also remember the spirit of the resistance and if they can pull this off without any violence, from either side, that would be great news. Of course the blockades and such have not occurred in large scale yet, but they will.

I am a Canadian Citizen but am not native. I feel for you all as we are the ones that came and took your land from you. I stand by you 100% against the HST. I feel you deserve a lot more respect than what you are receiving. My prayers are with you.

I agree, when we took all the land from the indians we made certain deals and they were called treaties. So we should keep our word.

I believe as a Native that indirectly the government is saying go back to the reserves. Do not try to be exempt from one tax !

I have native children.I however am not native, I don't AGREE with the HST because they have not told ME what those changes are.I'm more concerned about how this HST affects the Native Status Card. I have gone into grocery store where people say "we don' accept this card".Maybe ignorance, maybe owners of small convnience stores not willing to accept a tax card.I've heard every excuse for NOT accepting a tax card.I drove my child 1200 miles to get her card in person because In was accepted into the family.I will not tolerate anyone saying you cannot use this card here. For the record, I was born in Scotland, where we have issues too, but that is a different story.I have lived and loved with a Native Family, and ave been given a name by an elder.Natives will need to stand up and say "We don't want this HST Bullshit" Give us our discount. In thew 16 years that I have been with an Ojibwa family, I have learned many things. My daughters are future generation natives, they stand proud about who they are, they know where they came from, and most of all they know love. The Government does'nt.Peace Out

    My opinion:
Most natives bitching and whining now werent directly affected by "government unjust" (which is bullshit). Canadians pay taxes. Therefore, I dont even consider natives Canadian. They're speckled shit in our country.

How can you expect to just suckle on the teet of society and not give back?
You're like the child who stays at home for all of his life and never gets a job.

That's not really a metaphor actually, that's what all natives are.

This Adam guy must be one hell of a couch potatoe. I am Native who was raised by a white catholic family. You are ignorant why don't you go back to the white or whatever colour you are, country you originally came from. Natives have more rights then you ever should. You probably drink your face off, sit around playing xbox and have never contributed to societyor the earth. Educate yourself White man came and tool everything there was a treaty signed and mabey you do not know what that is but it is a legal contract and now the so called canadian gov is breaking it. I bet the only contract you know is from your cell phone. You ignorant poor excuse for a person. I bet you would sped up if there was a hurt animal on the road. Get a life and an education your probably on welfare.

I believe all of you need to open your eyes and see what taxes really do and how they work. Yes, the government takes our money. If you don't like it, move to South America or Africa where little taxes are imposed and see the quality of life. We are all lucky to be living in a Country like ours. Yes, treaties were signed to help ease the discontent of the chiefs, but as any contract there is fine print and back doors. The Government of Canada knows what they are doing. They are all very educated and know what they can and cant get away with. The place you call home is not yours, its all of ours. Pay your dues or get the fuck out.

People are worried about the H1N1, 2012, A.I.D.S, when really we should be worried about the dirty inbred natives that plague this wonderful country.

If they want to not pay taxes. Then pay for your own education, and quit using our resources ( ie.roadways, public buildings) paid for by real "Canadians".

In my opinion we should have wiped you feather wearing cockroaches out when we had the chance.

George, that's pretty harsh, and for your information, Natives are real Canadians and the reason they have these tax exemptions is because of that and the fact that what was done to their ancestors was a disgrace and a stain on Canadian history.

First of all, I am Native and very proud of it. It is worthy to mention, I have yet to meet one Caucasian individual who didn't claim they have 1/100th of Native blood in them.

So, go ahead and speak negatively of Native people. You see that's how we, Natives differ from people such as yourself, ADAM & GEORGE. We do not need to personally attack other races to elevate ourselves.

BTW, there are many Native people who do pay taxes and pay for their own education, such as myself. I have two degrees and make my contribution to my country by working in the health care system therefore; I urge you to get a referral for some psychiatric therapy....STAT!

It would be interesting to see how Adam would have handled being torn away from his family and raised by white Catholics while being beaten and raped. Methinks his heart and soul would have a different opinion of just how we have treated our native peoples! Adam's opinion is either one of two things: 1) A young child that just doesn't have a clue or 2) One of the most ignorant adults I have ever heard!

I had to say that Adam and George gave me a good laugh that I needed on this monday. No fellow Canadian will actually take those two seriously. I am native, and the fact that they don't understand taxes, or history tells me they haven't hit grade 5 yet. First of, I am native. I pay my taxes on my salary, and for what, is beyond me. See, taxes are charged by the governement in order to pay for services, and administration of government of the people. We, as natives, are SELF GOVERNED. Why do I keep paying taxes on my salary, when it goes to fix the roads outside of my community is beyond me. We pay for our own road work, and many other services. That is why we do not pay taxes to the canadian government. It is the same as asking Adam and George to pay american taxes while resding in Canada. Yet, because I sometimes work off reserve, I pay my taxes. and I bet FAR more than Adam and George combined. People like them make the general canadian population look bad, when in fact, 90% of the population are not like them. (or him) And besides, who posts with generic false names like "Adam" and George". Either false names, or very unoriginal parents. I guess the beer never falls far from the trailer, right?

    My closing argument,
So tell me, "You curious, George?"

After reading what i was going to write i decided to sum it up.... natives.. get over it.. white people don't pay attention to it.. its good to see the government finally standing up to "them" because yes we have done some inappropriate things as white society but "they've" done a lot of things too that would seem to me like taking advantage of nice white folk being generous i thought u fuckers traded your shit away back in the day when we didnt need ur tax money so we didnt care

OMG.....Poor Adam and George- raised by whitetrash parents full of nothing but hate and bitterness. Spending ur life putting down other races when there is nothing u can do about it. Natives, blacks and all the other wonderful ethnic groups out there are what make Canada a beautiful multi-cultural society. And much to your dismay I am sure, the seed of these beautiful people will continue to blend with white society and your future grandchildren etc will all have native, black blood in them. Ain't life grand?!
