Democracy of Hypocrisy

Talk of the Liberals and the NDP possibly merging to form a new party has me wondering how in the hell Stephen Harper pulled this off? Not only has he kicked Dion in the pants but if this pans out, he managed to chase Ignatieff as well as the Liberal party itself. This is huge, not that I care about the Liberal party, but the fact that Harper could force these two party's to form a new one is amazing, it really is. I know I sound like a Harper fanboy, but I am not, it's just I know how hard Ignatieff is working to try and topple Stevo and to go this route is unexpected.
Follow up:
Why bother with a coalition when you can just change the party name and have the exact same leaders and the exact same problem. If they do this, they are doomed, they just don't get it, people don't want either Iggy or Jack running the country. All in all though I figure this just to be political posturing and I can't see either party leader giving up their positions for this. This plan for sure would give Harper the majority he dreams about every night.
This is just absurd really![]()

Ideologically both parties have never been that far apart. Such a "joining" just might not morph the way you think.

The Liberals have always been the "social" conscience of Canada, but not so fanatical as the NDP. The hard-liners in each party will revolt against the merger just as Red Tories like Joe Clark railed against the alignment of the PC's and Canadian Alliance (Reform).
If it actually takes place it'll throw the entire mosaic of Canadian politics for a loop, but I don't see it as an answer to Harper's government.
