An inside look at the Toronto Humane Society revealed a place where neglected animals lived and died in terrible pain and feral cats roamed free in the basement and between walls, one dying a slow death in a trap.

From what I have been reading, its about time. My gosh, wtf is goin on there? I am appalled at the revelations of how that place was run and what it has become. I have never really been a fan of humane societies because of their approach to euthanasia, that is, their taking in animals for a few days and then killing them. But THS was different in that they allegedly have a no kill policy in place, something you would think I would agree with, which I do, to an extent. However, word is that they let terminally sick animals and other sick animals who have no hope for survival to suffer needlessly to suit some personal agenda. I do not agree with this, I do not like to see animals suffer and the very thought of it upsets me.

...

The pictures that the media has put out there are rather disturbing, but it's reality. Many of the animals in these "shelters" are brought in that way. So I think in regards to the pictures of the sick animals, one must use caution when casting judgement. We don't know if any of the animals were actually on medication for their ailments. They might have been, they might not have been. But apparently THS has been under investigation for some time now and there are facebook groups and a website online that want to see major changes at THS.

Some speak of political posturing occurring and that its all politics rather than animal welfare. The rift between the THS and the OSPCA has been well publicized throughout the years and if people would rather focus on that issue than the animals that they are there to protect, than it is rather disgusting in my opinion. Regardless, it is time for new management at THS, and the info I have read on the ART website (Association for the reform of the Toronto Humane Society)shows that mismanagement has been happening for quite some time. What I would like to know though is why wasn't something done sooner? With all these veterinarians and staff leaving throughout the years due to the conditions they state, why wasn't something done? What about the people who still work there now or volunteer their time? I gather that if one speaks up, they lose their job or get suspended, at least thats the general feeling I get from reading the stories.

Now it comes to light that the people being charged will be using the funds from donations to pay their legal fees, and I must ask, is that even legal? Unless they stipulate somewhere that donations may be used for legal fees, I wonder if they even have a right to do that. People should be asking questions. My mother donates to THS and she now says that she won't be doing that anymore. I can understand why, but I also understand that many, many people will also stop donating and that will only hurt the animals even more. I just hope that the THS can turn around and be run by competent people who only care about the animals and not money or their own agendas. I hate seeing animals suffer, yet I also hate seeing perfectly healthy animals put down simply because no one wanted them, it's a tragedy.
